The financial side of custody disputes

On Behalf of | Feb 5, 2020 | Family Law

Parents have many different factors to consider while they are working through a dispute over child custody, such as helping their child process the major changes that lie ahead and preparing for court. However, the financial aspects of a child custody dispute require careful consideration since they have an impact on how courts decide to award custody. If one parent is facing financial hardships, for example, this has the potential to interfere with their ability to secure custody.

Raising a child is very costly, whether a parent needs to pay for medical costs, education and even food. With college tuition and costly medical needs, some parents have a particularly hard time in terms of providing their children with the financial support they need. This is one factor that courts will take into consideration when attempting to award child custody in an appropriate manner. If you are facing financial hurdles, prepare yourself for how this could impact custody. For example, if you are able to increase your income by taking a higher-paying position, this will likely improve your prospects.

On the other hand, if the other parent of your child is facing financial problems, you likely worry about their ability to provide for your child and this issue requires your attention. In some instances, it is important to bring this up in court to help ensure that a child receives the support they need. There are many other issues that come into question during a custody dispute and we talk about this topic in more detail on other parts of our site.
